The UMBC men's soccer team (1-0-1) returns to Retriever Soccer Park for a pair of matches over Labor Day weekend. First up, the Retrievers host Liberty University (2-0-0) on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7:00 p.m.

BREAKING NEWS

  • The second largest crowd in Retriever Soccer Park history witnessed a dominant UMBC (1-0-1) performance, but the Retrievers came away with a 1-1 draw versus Old Dominion (0-0-2) on Monday, August 28.
  • A student-based crowd of 2,891 descended upon the field for the opening home game of the campaign. Only a turnout of 3,768 versus Maryland in 2017 exceeded the attendance to cap UMBC's "Move-In" weekend.
  • UMBC senior midfielder Jordan Travers (Urbana, Md.) scored in the 37' as the hosts controlled the first half. They continued to press in the second half, but could not come up with the insurance marker and ODU got the game-tying goal in the 78'.
  • Senior forward Taylor Calheira earned a pair of honors earlier this week. He was selected as the America East Conference's Offensive Player of the Week and tabbed to College Soccer News' Team of the Week. Calheira netted a hat trick in the Aug. 24 opener at George Mason in UMBC's 4-3 triumph.
  • The win over the Patriots was the first in the head coaching tenure of Anthony Adams, UMBC '97. Adams spent the previous 26 seasons as assistant, then associate head coach to Pete Caringi, Jr. Caringi, Jr. retired after 32 seasons at the helm, but his son, Pete Caringi III, UMBC '15  enters his tenth season on the staff.

A GLANCE AT THE FLAMES
  • Liberty joined the Ohio Valley Conference in men's soccer for the fall of 2023.
  • The Flames have scored six goals in their opening two games – home victories over St. Peters' (3-2) and Belmont Abbey (3-1).
  • Gabe Findley and Michael Huss each have a pair of goals for the Flames.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
  • This will be just the second meeting between UMBC and Liberty since 1997.
  • The Retrievers triumphed, 4-1, over visiting LU in 2019.
  • The Flames still lead the all-time series, 4-3-0
