BALTIMORE --
Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) homered and drove in three runs as the UMBC Softball team opened America East Tournament play with a 7-0 win over UMass Lowell.
Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.)Â pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits, striking out eight and walking just one.Â
- UMBC (24-15) scored two runs in the first after working the UMass Lowell starter for 51 pitches.
- Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) worked bases loaded walk on a 13-pitch at bat to make it 1-0, before Coppersmith drove in another run to make it 2-0
- It remained 2-0 until the third when Wilson blasted a solo homer.
- UMBC busted the game open in the fourth with three runs, all with two outs
- Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) got the rally started with a two-out single, followed by an Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) walk.
- Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md.) then ripped an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0
- Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) then walked to load the bases and Wilson and Nutile each followed with RBI walks of their own to make it 6-0
- In the sixth, Della Guardia hit a leadoff double and would score on Wilson's two out RBI single
Della Guardia, Wilson and Granzow all had multi-hit games, while
Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) added a single of her own.
UMBC will play again tomorrow at 11 a.m. against the winner of the Binghamton vs UAlbany game.
