Matter, Wilson and Strong Defense Help Softball Past UAlbany, 1-0

BALTIMORE -- Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) pitched a complete game shutout, Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) blasted a homer and the defense made some incredible plays as the UMBC Softball team defeated UAlbany. 1-0, on Friday to advance to the America East Championship

Matter struck out 10, walked one and allowed just three hits to improve to 13-5 on the season

How It Happened:
  • Matter retired the first 11 batters of the game before allowing a two out double to America East Player of the Year Morgan Petty in the fourth
  • A walk put two on, but Matter got a ground out to end the threat
  • The Retrievers were held without a hit until the bottom of the fourth, when Wilson blasted an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to put UMBC (25-15) up 1-0.
  • The Great Danes looked to answer in the fifth, but Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) made a sensational catch catch of a blloper in center for an out
  • UAlbany had its best chance in the sixth when Petty singled with two outs.
  • The next batter singled to right field, but Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) made an incredible throw from right to throw out Petty at third
  • Matter pitched a perfect seventh, finishing with two straight strikeouts, to end the game.
  • Wilson was the only Retriever with multiple hits, while Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) each had singles.
UMBC will play in the Championship tomorrow at noon.
