Lowell, Mass. – UMBC softball captured the series at UMass Lowell, winning the rubber game, 5-2, at River View Field on Saturday.
The America East-leading Retrievers improved to 15-10 overall and 7-1 in league play, while UML slipped to 13-20-1, 3-5. Six of UMBC's seven league victories have occurred in come-from-behind fashion.
As they did in Friday's opener, the duo of
Kya Matter and
Courtney Coppersmith combined in the circle to hold off the River Hawks. Matter, who improved to 9-4, went 5.2 innings and did not allow and earned run, while Coppersmith finished up to earn her second save of the series.
The River Hawks broke on top, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. But UMBC did wait long before responding, they crossed the plate five times in the top of the second.
Sophomore OF
Jerzie Nutile led off by hitting her third home run of the year over the fence in left-center. With one out, UMBC would load the bases and junior 1B
Ashley Della Guardia ripped a single over the bag at third, scoring
Zoe Russell and
Jaedyn McKeon to put the Retrievers ahead, 3-2.
Macy Granzow and Della Guardia would move to third and second on a wild pitch, and with two outs, Granzow scored on an error by the River Hawk shortstop. For the third time on the weekend, senior
Madison Wilson produced a two-out RBI as her single to right field plated Della Guardia.
Matter wriggled out of a bases loaded jam in the second, fanning a batter on a 3-2 count to end the threat. She also struck out the final hitter of the UML fourth with runners on first and second.
Coppersmith got the final out of the UML sixth inning. She allowed a lead-off double in the seventh, but retired the next three batters to seal the victory.
Nutile and Wilson each had a pair of hits for UMBC. Matter and Coppersmith were tough with two outs, as UML stranded 10 runners on the day.
