BALTIMORE – UMBC men's lacrosse opened up an early 6-0 lead and posted a 15-8 America East victory over visiting UMass Lowell before 687 fans at UMBC Stadium.
Graduate student attackman
Brett Baucia had a hand in seven of UMBC's goals, scoring four times and adding three assists. The seven points exceeded his previous career best of five, recorded on two occasions earlier in 2023.
Midfielders
Dane Hall and
Jordan Galloway each recorded their second career hat tricks and Hall posted his first career four-point effort. Senior attackman
Mike Doughty tied his career high with four assists. Freshman face-off specialist
Alex Steers, who had only attempted one draw before today, won 16-of-24 and garnered a team season-best 11 ground balls.
UMBC made it look easy early, forcing turnovers on the first four River Hawk possessions and scoring three times on the other end. Baucia (1:32), senior midfielder

Steers came off the bench and won the remaining five face-offs of the quarter. After Baucia scored his second goal at 11:12, Steers' wins led to goals by junior midfielder
Brian Tregoning (11:56) and Hall (12:45).
UML's Jackson Dean halted the 6-0 run by scoring on the River Hawks' lone shot of the quarter at the 14:59 mark.
Retriever junior close defender
Ethan Robinson scored his second career goal to open the second quarter, but the River Hawks outscored UMBC, 4-2, to cut their deficit to 9-5 at halftime.
But that was as close as the River Hawks would get, as UMBC went on a 4-1 run to lead 13-6 by the 2:50 mark of the fourth quarter. Junior attackman
Mateo Brown scored back-to-back goals in a span of 50 seconds midway through the third quarter to surpass the 30-goal mark (31) on the season.
UMBC caused a season-high 13 turnovers as senior defender
Ben Stephanos recorded four and sophomore LSDM
Colby Weishaar added three. UML's Riley Lawhorn led his side with three goals, while freshman goalkeeper Luke Renaud made 16 saves.
The Retrievers improved to 7-3 on the season and 2-2 in America East play. They are 6-0 at home in 2023 and 18-2 in their last 20 contests on campus.
