BALTIMORE --
Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.) had the go-ahead two RBI single in the seventh and
Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) picked up his fourth save of the season as the UMBC Baseball team defeated visiting Coppin State, 6-5, in a back-and-forth affair at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.
Ben Craig (Keezletown, Va.) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first career win, while
Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) also drove in a pair for UMBC (20-18).
How it Happened:
- Coppin State jumped ahead in the first on a two out single, but Joshua Rivera (Leesburg, Va.). making his first career start, escaped further damage with a strikeout
- After a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth, Rivera exited and Sam Daniels (Millersville, Md.) entered and kept the Eagles off the board
- The score remained 1-0 untul the bottom of the sixth when Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) blasted a two-out solo homer to tie the game.
- It was Molessa's team-leading 14th homer and 50th RBI of the season.
- Trythall and Anthony Swenda (Bridgeport, Pa.) were each hit-by-a-pitch to put two on with two outs, and UMBC would take the lead on Cilio's two-run triple.
- Cilio would then make it 4-1 on a Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.)Â double
- The Eagles would take the lead back in the top of the seventh thanks to a pair of errors allowing four runs (three uneanred) to score, but Craig got a strikeout to strand two in scoring position
- In the bottom half of the inning, Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) hit a leadoff single, stole second and went to third on an error.
- Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) then walked and stole second, before he and Taylor scored on Trythall's one out single
- CSU got a pair of two out walks in the eighth, and Kelly entered and got a strikeout to keep the Dawgs in front.
- In the ninth, Coppin got two on with one out after a pair of walks, but Kelly got a strikeout and Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) made a diving catch in right field to end the game
The Retrievers head to Binghamton for a key America East series this weekend. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
