Vestal, N.Y. -- The UMBC Baseball team scored nine runs in the third inning en route to a 10-6 win at America East rival Binghamton on Friday afternoon.
Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) had an all-around effort as he went 2-for-6 with three RBI, two doubles, two stolen bases and a run scored.Â
Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) also drove in three runs, while
Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) reached base five times as he went 3-for-4 with two walks and two runs scored.
Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) improved to 6-1 on the season as he allowed just two runs in 5.2 innings pitched.
How it Happened:
- Binghamton got on the board with a leadoff homer in the first, but UMBC (21-18, 10-6 AE) would answer right back in the top of the second
- Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.) singled with one out and then moved to second when Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) was hit by a pitch.
- Trythall would score all the way from second on an Anthony Swenda (Bridgeport, Pa.) single that tied the game
- The Bearcats got a leadoff double in the second, but Johnson retired the next three in order to keep the game tied
- Taylor singled and Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) doubled to put two in scoring position right away in the third.
- Molessa then gave the Retrievers the lead with an RBI groundout to third that scored Taylor, who was running on contact
- Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) followed with a walk, and Trythall would bring home Krueger with a single to make it 3-1
- After a pop up, Swenda walked to load the bases and Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.) worked full count walk to force in a run and make it 4-1
- Easley then cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to blow open the game and make it 7-1
- After Taylor walked, Krueger made it 8-1 with an RBI single.
- A passed ball put two in scoring position for Molessa, who promptly drove them both home with a two-run single to make the score 10-1
- BU would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a two out solo home run
- The Bearcats would load the bases with two outs in the fifth, but Johnson got a strikeout to end the threat
- Eddie Sargent (Severn, Md.) replaced Johnson with two on and two outs in the sixth, and got a ground ball to end the threat
- Binghamton would score four in the seventh to cut the UMBC advantage to 10-6, but Ben Craig (Keezletown, Va.) and Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to close out the contest
The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon. The first game will be a seven inning game.
