Johnson Tosses Complete Game, Shertel Goes 8.2 Innings as Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against UMass Lowell

BALTIMORE -- Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) tossed a complete game in game one, while Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) followed with 8.2 brilliant innings in game two as the UMBC Baseball team swept visiting UMass Lowell in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Johnson struck out five and allowed just one run in a 5-1, seven inning, victory in game one. Shertel struck out eight and allowed just two earned runs in a 4-2 win in game two. Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) came on with two-on and two-outs in the ninth and recorded a fly out to pick up his second save of the season.

Game 1:
  • The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when UMBC (18-17, 8-6 AE) loaded the bases with one out and Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.) walked on a full count to force in a run.
  • Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) followed with a run scoring single, and Anthony Swenda (Bridgeport, Pa.) followed him with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
  • In the fifth, Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) was hit by a pitch with one out and would eventually score all the way from first on a Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) two out double that made it 4-0.
  • UMass Lowell would get a run back in the sixth on a solo homer, but Johnson stranded a runner at third with a strikeout to end the threat.
  • Swenda would blast a two-out solo home run in the bottom half of the sixth to push the lead to 5-1
  • Johnson worked around a one out single in the seventh to finish off the complete game
  • Diaz scored a pair of runs in the contest for UMBC
  • Johnson improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in America East play
Game 2:
  • The second game started similar to the first. as neither team could get much going early
  • The River Hawks broke through in the top of the fifth on a solo homer
  • Shertel would settle back in after that and retire the next nine UML batters in a row
  • UMBC finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) singled on the first pitch of the inning, and Trythall followed with a double to put two in scoring position.
  • Swenda was able to beat out an infield single to third to load the bases with none out.
  • After a force out at home, Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) tied the game on a sacrifice fly that scored Trythall and allowed both Swenda and Ryan to move into scoring position
  • Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.) then put the Retrievers in the lead with a two run single to right field.
  • Shertel allowed a leadoff walk in the eight, and got the next two batters out, but back-to-back singles scored a run and put the tying run at third base
  • Baracani then made a great play up the middle to field the ball and his throw just beat the runner at first by a half step to keep UMBC up 3-2
  • Krueger led off the bottom of the eight with a single and moved to third on a Molessa double.
  • Trythall lifted a sacrifice fly to score Krueger and push the lead back to two, at 4-2
  • Shertel got a strike out and a fly out to start the ninth, but a single and a walk ended his day
  • Kelly came on and got a fly out on his second pitch to secure the victory
  • Baracani went 3-for-3, while Molessa went 2-for-4
