BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Baseball team completed its three game sweep of visiting UMass Lowell by blasting four homers in a 12-9 win on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
With the win, the Retrievers move into a tie for second place in the America East.
Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.),
Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.),
Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) and
Leewood Molessa (Pullman, Va.) all hit homers for the Retrievers.
Trythall and Ryan each went 3-for-5, while driving in five and three, respectively.Â
Nick Remy (Atkinson, N.H.) came on in relief and pitched 4.2 solid innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits, to pick up his third win of the season
Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) worked a perfect ninth to earn his second consecutive save, and his third of the season
How it Happned:
- UMass Lowell took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but UMBC (19-17, 9-6) responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning
- Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) beat out an infield single to start the inning, and Taylor would work a walk to put two on.
- Trythall then blasted a three run shot over the center field fence with two outs to put the Retrievers on top
- Anthony Swenda (Bridgeport, Pa.) followed that with a single, stole second and then scored on a Ryan double.
- The River Hawks used a solo homer in the second to cut the deficit to 4-3, and it would remain that way until the bottom of the third when Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) hit a leadoff double and came home to score on a Molessa RBI single.
- Ryan would eventually drive in Molessa on an infield single to give UMBC a 6-3 advantage
- UML re-took the lead in the top of the fourth after three straight walks and a grand slam to start the inning, but Remy then entered and got the next three batters in a row
- This time it was UMBC who had a quick answer as Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.), Diaz and Taylor all walked to load the bases with one out in the fourth
- After a strike out, Trythall ripped a two RBI single to the gap in right-center to put the Retrievers back on top, 8-7.
- Remy worked a perfect top of the fifth, and Ryan opened the bottom of the inning with a solo homer to push the lead to 9-7
- The River Hawks would get the run back in the top of the sixth, and then would tie the game in the seventh on an error
- Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) blooped a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, and would score on Taylor's two out homer to center
- UML got a runner to second with two outs in the eighth, but Ben Craig (Keezletown, Va.) entered and struck out the batter to strand the runner
- Molessa blasted a no-doubt solo shot, his team-best 13th of the season, to leadoff the eighth and make it 12-9
- Kelly then entered and worked a perfect ninth to close out the game.
The Retrievers host a pair of 6 p.m. mid-week contests at Alumni Field this week. First, Maryland comes to town on Tuesday, followed by a visit from Coppin State on Wednesday.
