Baltimore, Md. --
Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) had a pair of RBI and stole three bases,
Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) homered and drove in three and
Joshua Rivera (Leesburg, Va.) came on in relief and picked up his first career win as the UMBC Baseball team defeated visiting Maryland Eastern Shore, 11-5, on Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
How it Happened:
- After a scoreless first two innings, UMES got on the board with a three-run homer after an error extended the inning
- The Retrievers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with six runs as Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.) worked a leadoff walk, followed by Diaz blasting the ninth pitch of his at bat over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 3-2
- Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) followed the homer with a single to force a pitching change
- After Easley stole second and went to third on an error, Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) tied the game with an RBI single.
- Krueger would eventually score on a Ryan RBI single to give UMBC the lead
- After Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) scored on a wild pitch, Anthony Swenda (Bridgeport, Pa.) would drive in Ryan with an RBI single to make it 6-3.
- The Hawks would load the bases with no outs in the fifth, but Rivera got a run-scoring double play and a fly out to escape with a 6-4 lead
- UMBC would add to the lead in the sixth when Derek Paris (Lanesborough, Mass.) had an RBI double, and Baracani and Diaz each had a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 9-4
- UMES would get one back in the seventh after a two out pop up got lost in the lights and allowed a run to score
- Sam Daniels (Millersville, Md.) would get a strike out to strand a runner at third and keep the lead at 9-5
- In the bottom of the seventh, Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) hit a booming double off the top of the wall, and would score on a Ryan single
- The Retrievers would add a run in the eighth on a pair of walks, a wild pitch and a balk
- Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) would enter to pitch the ninth and struck out the side in order
