Coppersmith Named America East Pitcher of the Week; Softball to Host Towson on Wednesday Night

BOSTON -- UMBC Softball graduate student Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was named the America East Pitcher of the Week, the Conference announced on Tuesday. In 12.1 innings of work, she totaled 20 strikeouts and a pair of saves. Overall, she allowed only six hits, one walk, and an earned run in the series win at UMass Lowell.

The Retrievers make a quick return home for a mid-week matchup against Towson on Wednesday night at The Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Last Time Out:
  • UMBC softball captured the series at UMass Lowell, winning the rubber game, 5-2, at River View Field on Saturday.
  • The America East-leading Retrievers improved to 15-10 overall and 7-1 in league play, while UML slipped to 13-20-1, 3-5. Six of UMBC's seven league victories have occurred in come-from-behind fashion.
  • As they did in Friday's opener, the duo of Kya Matter and Coppersmith combined in the circle to hold off the River Hawks. Matter, who improved to 9-4, went 5.2 innings and did not allow and earned run, while Coppersmith finished up to earn her second save of the series.
  • Sophomore OF Jerzie Nutile led off by hitting her third home run of the year over the fence in left-center. With one out, UMBC would load the bases and junior 1B Ashley Della Guardia ripped a single over the bag at third, scoring Zoe Russell and Jaedyn McKeon to put the Retrievers ahead, 3-2.
  • Macy Granzow and Della Guardia would move to third and second on a wild pitch, and with two outs, Granzow scored on an error by the River Hawk shortstop.
  • For the third time on the weekend, senior Madison Wilson produced a two-out RBI as her single to right field plated Della Guardia.
Scouting Towson:
  • The Tigers have won five of their last seven games including a series win against Hofstra this past weekend.
  • The Tigers are coming off a 2-1 series win against Hofstra this past weekend. Towson dropped game one 9-1 before rattling off a 12-5 win in game two and a hard fought 8-6 win in game three to take the series. Towson is currently sitting in fourth place in the CAA standings with three conference weekends to go.
  • Towson and UMBC have met 57 times prior to the midweek matchup with the Retrievers leading the all-time series 37-20. Last year, Towson fell 4-2 in late April at Tiger Softball Stadium. Prior to that, the Tigers had won the previous nine meetings.
