BALTIMORE -- Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) pitched five no-hit innings, while
Macy Granzow (Glen Dale, Md.) drove in a run and made a game-saving home run robbery as the UMBC Softball team defeated visiting Mount St. Mary's, 3-2, on Wednesday night in the first home night game in Retrievers history.
How it Happened:
- Granzow doubled to leadoff the first, moved to second on a Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) single, and then scored on a Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) RBI single to give UMBC (6-3) a 1-0 lead.
- Coppersmith would eventually score on a Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) sacrifice fly to make it 2-0
- The score would remain 2-0 until the fourth when Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) hit a leadoff single.
- Amaya Carroll (Hanover, Md.) came in to pinch run and moved to second on a Jaedyn McKeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) sacrifice bunt.
- Caroll would then score on a two-out bloop single to shallow left by Granzow to make it 3-0.
- After a line out to center to start the fifth, Matter would strike out the final two batters she faced to complete her appearance.
- She struck out eight and walked one
- Mount St. Mary's would get their first base runner after an error, and then a run would score after a pair of hits.
- After a wild pitch made it 3-2, Granzow made her leaping homerun robbery with the tying run at second to keep the Retrievers in the lead
- Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) made a diving grab of a soft liner with the tying run at third to end the inning.
- Coppersmith punctuated a perfect seventh with a strikeout to seal the win
- It was Coppersmith's first save of the season, and extended her program record for career saves to 10.
UMBC will play five games this weekend as it hosts the Retriever Classic featuring Merrimack, Morgan State and Cornell.
