Game Recap: Softball |

Matter Stays Hot in the Circle as Softball Splits on Saturday.

UMBC Softball's Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) continued her stellar week in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing just one run in a complete game, 6-1, victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon.

In the nightcap, the Retrievers were held in check on offense as Cornell won 2-1

Game 1:
  • UMBC got the scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) got on with a one out single and was followed by a Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) single.
  • Macy Granzow (Glen Dale, Md.) would get an RBI single, which was followed by a Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) two-run double to make it 3-0.
  • The following inning, Stott would get an RBI single while batting lefty to go up 4-0.
  • Granzow would get a leadoff single in the sixth, and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) would garner her third intentional walk, and four the overall in the game.
  • Both would move up on a passed ball and then both would score on an Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) groundout.
  • Morgan State would get a solo homer in the seventh, but that would be it as Matter closed the door.
Game 2:
  • Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) had a solid start, allowing just two runs in 4.2 innings.
  • Coppersmith entered with two-on and two outs in the fifth and got a strike out to end the threat
  • UMBC (7-4) could muster only three hits in the first six innings, with Granzow, Della Guardia and Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) picking them up.
  • Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) would leadoff the seventh with a pinch-hit single, Nutile would beat out a double play ball and Evix would get a two-out RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1, but they could not complete the comeback.

UMBC completes weekend play with games at 1:30 and 4 p.m. tomorrow against Merrimack and Cornell.
