Baseball Defeats Navy, 8-1, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards

BALTIMORE – Freshman Eddie Sargent (Severn, Md.) picked up his first career win with five solid innings of work and Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI as the UMBC Baseball team defeated Navy, 8-1, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

How it Happened:
  • After UMBC (11-9) stranded a pair in the top of the first, Navy (12-13) got back-to-back singles to start the bottom half.
  • Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) would then make a sensational diving catch in the gap in left-center before Sargent would induce an inning-ending double play to end the threat
  • In the top of the second, Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) and Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) would hit back-to-back singles to open the frame before moving into scoring on an error.
  • Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) would drive in Ryan with a sacrifice fly to put UMBC up 1-0.
  • Ian Diaz would then single home Krueger to make it 2-0, and an error later in the inning would allow two more runs to score before Taylor would race home all the way from second on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
  • Navy would get on the board in the 4th after a pair of walks and a two-out single, but Sargent would get a strikeout to strand a pair
  • The Retrievers would answer in the top of the fifth after Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled and moved to third on a Taylor double. Both would come in to score on a Ryan two RBI single to make it 7-1.
  • Evan Selmer (Beltsville, Md.) entered to pitch the bottom of the sixth, and after a lead off walk, would strike out the side.
  • Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) would smack a double to start the seventh, moved to third on a Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) pinch-hit single and scored on a Ryan sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 8-1.
  • Matt Clarke (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and got the Midshipmen in order after he struck out the first batter, got a great defensive catch from Diaz in right and induced a groundout to shortstop Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.)
  • Joshua Rivera (Bloomfield, N.J.) was the next reliever in and he worked a scoreless eighth.
  • Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) worked a perfect ninth to seal the victory

UMBC continues it's run of non-conference opponents when it heads north to face UConn this weekend.
