Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Balanced Effort Propels Men's Lacrosse Easily Past Merrmack, 15-5

UMBC is 5-0 at home this season and has outscored its five foes, 65-27.

BALTIMORE – UMBC Men's Lacrosse continued its dominance on the turf at UMBC Stadium, excelling on both ends of the field in a 15-5 America East Conference victory over associate league member Merrimack.

Junior A/M Mateo Brown also kept his robust scoring pace going, netting five goals and adding an assist to lead a balanced Retriever attack.

UMBC held Merrimack to 10 first half shots, and out-fired the Warriors, 52-27 for the game. The Retriever defense caused nine of the Warriors' 21 turnovers and junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue made six of his 11 saves in the final period. Merrimack was averaging 11.6 goals per game in their first seven outings of the campaign.

The Retrievers improved to 6-2, 1-1 in America East, while Merrimack slipped to 4-4, 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After missing the last six games due to injury, it took UMBC senior A/M Mike Doughty just 30 seconds in the game to find the net. He converted from short range on a pass from behind the net, the first of three Allen Hockenberry assists.
  • Merrimack forced the lone tie of the game at 3:40, but Brian Tregoning, Jordan Galloway and Brown tallied the final three first quarter goals to give the Retrievers a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes.
  • The Warriors crept to within 5-3, but UMBC sophomore midfielder Josh Tang started a 6-0 Retriever run 16 seconds shy of the midpoint of the second quarter. Hockenberry's pass from the left side found Tang unguarded at the right post.
  • UMBC led, 8-3, at halftime, and, after another Doughty score at the 3:04 mark of the third quarter, senior midfielder Taylor Bohanan completed the surge with back-to-back scores.
  • Merrimack snapped a drought of 22:54 with two goals in a 42-second span on man-up chances in the final minute of the third quarter.
  • UMBC led, 11-5, after 45 minutes and scored the final four goals of the game in the fourth quarter.
Doughty recorded two goals and two assists, Hockenberry scored a goal to go along with his three helpers, and Tang and Bohanan each tallied twice.
Senior defenseman Tony Diallo led the defensive charge with three caused turnovers. Junior face-off specialist Zach Dudley won 14-of-24 draws and collected eight ground balls.

Trace Hogan led Merrimack with a goal and two helpers and junior goalkeeper Henry Vogt came up with 17 saves in 56:05.
