Softball Falls in 10 Innings to Hofstra

BALTIMORE – Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) pitched ten solid innings, but the UMBC Softball team couldn't get going on offense in a 5-2, 10 inning, loss to visiting Hofstra on Thursday.

How it Happened:
  • The Retrievers had two batters reach in each of the first four innings, but could not capitalize on any of the opportunities as they eventually left seven on base through five innings.
  • Hofstra threatened in the sixth after back-to-back singles with one out but Matter got a fly out and a lineout to end the threat.
  • Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Ps.) got a leadoff single in the sixth, but a double-play erased the runner
  • UMBC had another chance in the seventh after Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) reached on an error to start the inning, but couldn't score as the game went to extra innings
  • Hofstra would take advantage of the free runner in the top of the eighth as they put runners on the corners after a leadoff bunt single, followed by a single to go up 1-0
  • UMBC would tie it up in the bottom of the eighth after Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) bunted over the free runner Macy Granzow (Glen Dale, Md.), and Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) drove her home with an infield single.
  • The Pride would again take the lead in the ninth after the free runner would score on a one out double.
  • Evix would beat out an infield single with one out in the bottom half of the inning, and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) would score when the ball was thrown away on the play
  • Hofstra would score three in the top of the tenth, and this time the Retrievers would not be able to answer

The Retrievers open America East play at home this weekend against Bryant. They will play a single game on Saturday at 4p.m., and then follow with a noon double-header on Sunday.
