Riggs and Nutile Each Hit Two Homers as Softball Rallies for Sunday Split

Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) and Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) each hit a pair of homers, the first ones of their respective careers, as the UMBC Softball team earned a split on Sunday after rallying from a late five-run deficit against Morgan State.

UMBC scored nine runs in the final two innings to rally past Morgan State, 10-8, in the nightcap after dropping a 9-4 decision to Merrimack earlier in the afternoon.

Game 1:
  • Merrimack jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings
  • Riggs drove in her first of the game on a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-1 game in the third
  • The Warriors immediately responded with three runs to go up 7-1
  • Macy Granzow (Glen Dale, Md.) got a run back with an RBI double in the fourth, before Riggs hit a two-run blast in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-4
  • Merrimack got two back on a homer in the sixth to finish the scoring
  • Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Amaya Carroll (Hanover, Md.) had a pair of hits as well
Game 2:
  • Morgan State got on the board in the first with two runs on a pair of soft hits
  • The Lady Bears added three more in the second on two bloop hits and a pair of bunts
  • Nutile hit a solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 5-1.
  • MSU made it 6-1 on an unearned run in the fifth
  • Nutile hit her second homer of the game, a two-run blast, in the bottom half of the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-3.
  • Later that inning, Julia Colton (Elkridge, Md.) singled, stole second and then scored on a Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) two-out single to make it 6-4.
  • Riggs then followed by hitting her second homer of the day to tie the game
  • Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) entered to pitch in the sixth and worked a perfect inning
  • Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) had a one-out single in the bottom of the inning and moved to second on a two-out single from Carroll
  • Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) then laced a pinch hit single to load the bases with two outs
  • Granzow worked a full count and walked to force in the run and give UMBC a 7-6 lead
  • After a wild pitch made it 8-6, Keating ripped a two-run double to make it 10-6
  • Morgan State got a pair of runs, one unearned, in the top of the seventh, but O'Berg got a groundout to end the game
UMBC hits the road for the first time this season when it travels to Penn State for a five-game, three-day tournament.
