Evix and O'Berg Lead the Way as Softball Completes 4-0 Weekend

Game 1 Highlights | Game 2 Highlights

BALTIMORE -- Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) went 3-for-3 with three RBI in game one, while in game two Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) went 3-for-3 with two RBI at the plate and allowed just one run in five innings as she earned the win in the circle as the UMBC Softball team completed a perfect weekend with a pair of wins on Sunday.

The Retrievers held off Youngstown State, 6-3, in the opener before rallying for a 5-1 win over Lafayette to cap a 4-0 weekend.

Freshman Amaya Carroll (Hanover, Md.) allowed just one run and two hits in five innings of work against YSU to pick up her first career-victory.

Game 1:
  • UMBC (5-3) got the scoring started early when Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) singled with one out and was followed by back-to-back walks by Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) to load the bases.
  • Evix then ripped a double off the wall in right to drive in Keating and Coppersmith and give the Retrievers a 2-0 lead.
  • After Carroll worked a perfect top of the second, Catelyn Thrush (Perkasie, Pa.) was hit by a pitch and Macy Granzow (Glen Dale, Md.) reached on an error.
  • Each would move into scoring position on a Keating groundout, and both would score on a two-run single from Coppersmith that made it 4-0.
  • Senior Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.), taking the her first ever at-bat as a left handed hitter, drove in Coppersmith on a groundout to make it 5-0.
  • The score would remaint hat way until the fourth when Evix hit a two-out RBI double to score Della Guardia and make it 6-0.
  • Youngstown would get on the board in the fifth after a pair of walks and a single, but on the RBI single Della Guardia smartly cut the ball off and threw to Keating covering second to get the trail runner and end the inning
  • The Penguins would get a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) escaped a bases loaded jam to keep the lead at 6-3
  • Matter would then work a scoreless seventh to close out the victory
Game 2:
  • Making her first pitching start of the season, O'Berg got into some early trouble, allowing a run on three hits, but she stranded runners on the corners with a strikeout to end the inning and limit the damage
  • It was 1-0 until the bottom of the second when Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) would leadoff with a single
  • Granzow came in to pinch run, and would eventually score from second on an O'Berg one out single that tied the game up.
  • The tie was broken in the bottom of the third when Julia Colton (Elkridge, Md.) reached on an error to leadoff the inning, and would eventually score on Della Guardia's two out, two-run homer that gave UMBC a 3-1 lead.
  • The Retrievers would add some insurance in the fourth when Evix walked and O'Berg singled again to start the inning.
  • Keating came in to pinch run for Evix and would later score on a gorgeous RBI bunt single from Jadyn McKeon (Stewartstown, Pa.) that made it a 4-1 game.
  • Della Guardia would reach on an error to begin the fifth and would eventually score on O'Berg's third single of the game.
  • Coppersmith would enter to pitch in the sixth and would strike out three in two scoreless innings of work to seal the perfect weekend.

UMBC will hit the road, albeit not far, for the first time this season when it travels for a pair of games at Morgan State next Saturday. The face the hosts at 10 a.m., followed by a contest with Fairleigh Dickinson right after.
