Charleston, South Carolina – UMBC graduate student right fielder
Ian Diaz went 2-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs but the Retrievers dropped the rubber-game of their weekend series with the College of Charleston by a score of 11-3 on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.
How It Happened
- UMBC (1-3) allowed three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning as the Cougars (3-3) collected four hits. Second baseman Joseph Mershon opened the scoring with a two-run triple down the right field line and catcher JT Marr added an RBI single to right.
- The Retrievers got a run back in the top of the fourth as Diaz came through with a two-out RBI single to left center to plate senior designated hitter
Michael Cilio, who had reached on a walk.
- The hosts answered with four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth to expand their lead to 7-1. Shortstop Patrick Sanchez delivered an RBI single to left, Mershon plated two more with an infield single, and Harlan closed out the frame with an RBI sacrifice fly to left.
- After adding another run in the fifth on a steal of home, the Cougars pushed across two more in the sixth to up their lead to 10-1.
- The Retrievers scored two unearned runs on two hits and two errors to trim the deficit to 10-3 in the top of the eighth. Cilio scored on a throwing error and Diaz ripped a two-out RBI double to left to plate graduate student left fielder

Nick Remy fell to 0-2 after allowing five earned runs over 3.2 innings of work. Remy allowed nine hits while fanning four batters.
