Baseball Cruises to 13-1 Win in Home Opener

BALTIMORE – Graduate student Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a grand slam and Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) had four hits as the UMBC Baseball team cruised to a 13-1 home-opener win over Delaware State on Tuesday.

Sophomore Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) picked up the win in his first start of the season. Allowing just one run in 5.2 innings, while striking out three.

How it happened:
  • After a scoreless first three innings, UMBC (2-3) broke through in the fourth when three of the first four batters reached and Diaz blasted a grand slam to left.
  • Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) then worked a two-out walk, stole second and scored on an Anthony Swenda (Bridgeport, Pa.) double.
  • Ryan followed that up with an RBI double of his own to make it 6-0
  • Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) then singled home Ryan to push the lead to 7-0 after four
  • With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Dawson Baracani (Sammamish, Wash.) walked, Diaz was hit by a pitch and Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) also walked to load the bases.
  • Tayler then hit a two-RBI bloop single and Swenda followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-0 UMBC.
  • Ryan then added his second RBI double in a row to push the lead to 11-0 after five
  • Matt Clarke (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) entered to pitch with two outs in the top of the sixth and escaped a jam to go into the bottom of the inning up 11-1.
  • Derek Paris (Lanesborough, Mass.) singled to leadoff the sixth and got to third on an error on the throw.
  • He was then brought home on an RBI single by Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) that made it 12-1.
  • In the seventh Ryan picked up his fourth hit of the game on a single up the middle and then scored on a Paris two-out triple.
  • Evan Selmer (Beltsville, Md.) came in to pitch the eighth and stranded a pair in scoring position with back-to-back strikeouts.
  • Junior reliever Sam Daniels (Millersville, Md.) made his Alumni Field debut in the top of the ninth and struck out the side.
Molessa finished with three hits, while Diaz and Paris each had a pair of hits. Taylor, Swenda and Ryan each drove in a pair.

UMBC heads to Dover for a round robin tournament hosted by Delaware State. The Retrievers will face the hosts at 2:30 on Saturday. They will then have an 11 a.m. Sunday game against St. Peter's before closing the weekend against the host Hornets immediately after.
