20-0 Run Propels Women's Basketball Past Saint Francis

BALTIMORE -- Trinity Palacio had a season-best 19 points, while Jaliena Sanchez also poured in a season-high 17 points as the UMBC Women's Basketball team ended 2023 on a high note with a 85-53 rout of visiting Saint Francis on Friday evening at The Peake.

How it happened:
  • The Retrievers got off to a hot start, as back-to-back threes from Anna Blount and Palacio put the hosts up 11-6 midway through the quarter.
  • Palacio would hit a pair of late jumpers to extend the lead to 17-11 after the first
  • On the opening possession of the second frame, Sanchez would get a steal and a tough finish in transition to take a 19-11 lead and force the visitors to call timeout
  • Sanchez would go off in the quarter, finishing with 11 points in the frame as the Dawgs ended the half on an 18-0 run to lead 43-16 at the break.
  • Paloma Iradier hit a jumper to open the 2nd half scoring and conclude the 20-0 run
  • The Red Flash got to the free throw line on multiple times to cut into the lead early, but back-to-back threes from Sanchez and Palacio gave UMBC a game-high 31-point lead at 54-23 with 6:33 to go in the quarter.
  • SFU went on a 10-3 run, but the Retrievers ended the quarter on a 9-2 run, capped by a Palacio three at the buzzer, to take a 66-35 lead into the fourth.
  • Carmen Yánez hit back-to-back threes and Jordon Lewis follow with a trey of her won to give the Dawgs a 75-41 lead less than three minutes into the final framE
  • Anne Adewumi would come off the bench to score a career-high six points in the fourth en route to the victory.

The Retrievers open up America East play at Binghamton and Bryant next Thursday and Saturday
