Vestal, N.Y. -- Eight different Retrievers made a bucket, with seven making multiple, as the UMBC Women's Basketball team opened America East play with a 70-55 win at Binghamton on Thursday night.
The victory was the third straight for UMBC, who also opened America East play last season with a win over Binghamton.
Jaliena Sanchez and
Anna Blount each had a game-best 12 points, while
Jordon Lewis added 10 and the duo of
Trinity Palacio and
Jaden Walker tallied nine each.
Sanchez went 8-for-8 from the free throw line and all grabbed five rebounds, and had a pair of assists and steals. Blount pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, while Lewis went 4-for-6 from the field, including 2-for-3 from distance.
Carmen Yánez added eight points, while fellow Spaniard
Laura Lacambra chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.
The two teams traded the lead early, alternating points until Sanchez hit a pair of free-throws with 4:50 left in the first to put the Retrievers up for good, 10-9.
UMBC held a slim 26-24 lead midway through the second, but would end the half on a 14-1 run, capped by a Lewis three pointer with just seconds left, to go into the break up 38-25.
The Bearcats would close the gap to eight twice, early in the third, but UMBC answered each time to extend the lead back out. Binghamton would get no closer than nine points the rest of the game.
