Late Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball Against Colgate

BALTIMORE – The UMBC Women's Basketball team cut a late 10-point deficit to two, but couldn't equalize and fell, 57-51 to visiting Colgate on Saturday afternoon at The Peake.

Anna Blount had nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist in the effort


How it Happened:
  • The Retrievers scored the first seven points of the game, and led 11-6 at the first media timeout
  • Paloma Iradier had six of UMBC's first 11 points
  • UMBC took a 17-12 lead into the second quarter.
  • The Retrievers took a seven point lead at 23-16 on a Jaden Walker layup with 5:38 left.
  • UMBC would not score again until the buzzer as Anna Blount stole a ball in the paint and found a streaking Carmen Yánez who's layup just beat the buzzer and sent the Retrievers into the half up 25-20
  • UMBC was 6-9 from the field in the third, but was whistled for eight fouls to Colgate's two, and the Raiders held a 12-1 advantage on FT attempts
  • The Raider led 42-39 after a Lacambra buzzer-beating layup cut into the lead.
  • Colgate started the final stanza on a 7-0 run to take a game-high 10 point lead
  • Trinity Palacio and Blount each hit jumpers to trim the lead to six with just over four minutes remaining.
  • Walker hit a layup with three minutes left to cut the Colgate lead to 49-45, the grad student then got a steal on the other end which led to a pair of free throws for Palacio to cut the deficit to two
  • Colgate would hit a jumper, but Walker would get an offensive putback to make it a two point game with 90 seconds left
  • The Raiders would hit a second chance jumper to go back up four with 40.3 seconds to go.
  • The Retrievers would have turnovers on each of the ensuing possession and Colgate would hit two free throws over the span to go up six
  • Palacio would get an offensive putback with 14.9 left to make it a 55-51 game, but the Raiders would hit a pair of free throws to close it out
UMBC will conclude the three-game homestand by hosting local rival Loyola on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
