BALTIMORE --
Dani Nicusan took gold in all four events he competed in as the UMBC Men's Swimming and Diving team defeated a very strong La Salle squad, 155-145, on Saturday.
"We took a good step forward today. Especially with our younger swimmers, they will be a force for us this season," said head coach
Matt Donovan. "The divers fought hard and our senior leadership really lead the way. Big things to come for us this year."
Nicusan won the 100 Back, 100 Free, 200 IM and was on the gold-winning 200 Medley relay. In the latter, he was joined by
Max Casey-Bolanos,
Oliver Gassmann and
Bode Neale to finish in 1:33.22, just ahead of La Salle's top quartet's 1:33.86 time.
Neale finished third in the 100 Free and also won the 200 Free by .31 in a time of 1:45.21, while Nicusan, JJ Chapman and Casey-Bolanos went 1-2-3 in the 100 Back. Casey-Bolanos and Chapman then finished first and third in the 200 Back.
Freshman diver
Andy Vines impressed in his first home meet, coming in second in the 3 meter dive with a score of 267.00, and taking fourth in the 1 meter with a score of 199.12.
The Retrievers essentially sealed the victory by taking the top three spots in the penultimate event of the day, the 200 IM. After Nicusan touched first at 1:58.06,
James Tao (1:59.83) and
Zach Deal (2:02.38) followed to give UMBC a 15 point lead heading into the 400 Free, which they took second and third in.
The Retrievers will host the Black & Gold/Alumni Meet for Homecoming next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
