Defense Shines as Volleyball Defeats UNH in Four Sets

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Volleyball team held visiting New Hampshire to .103 hitting, including -.081 in the fourth, had 11 blocks, and out-dug the visitors 73-59 en route to a four set win (25-19, 17-25, 25-18, 25-12) on Sunday afternoon at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.

The Retrievers, who did not return home from Friday night's America East opener at Bryant until 5:30 am on Saturday, improved to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in America East play. UNH, who had a bye on Friday and last played on Saturday, September 23, dropped to 9-6 and 0-1 in the America East.

Hannah Howard followed up her brilliant performance on Friday with a match-best 18, while classmate Julija Grubisic Cabo had a solid all-around performance, finishing with 10 kills on .333 hitting, 15 digs, three aces, two blocks and two assists.

Kamani Conteh paced the offense as she had a match-high 14 kills and three blocks, and Mia Bilusic picked up a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs.

Aysia Miller, who returned on Friday from a five match absence due to injury, picked up right where she left off, tallying a double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs. Miller also had five kills and two blocks.

Mila Ilieva had eight kills on .467 hitting with five blocks (one solo) and five digs, while fellow middle Michela De Marzi had six blocks and four kills

Serin Maden was brilliant, finishing with 19 assists and four digs. 

UMBC returns to action next Sunday afternoon at UAlbany.
