Men's Basketball Set to Host Hartford on MLK Day

Retrievers seeking program-record 10th regular-season non-conference victory

LAST TIME OUT - UMBC GETS COMEBACK AMERICA EAST WIN AGAINST MAINE

- The Retrievers erased a 14-point second-half deficit and went on to defeat the Maine Black Bears, 85-77, Saturday afternoon at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
 - UMBC (12-6, 3-1 America East) graduate student forward Tra'Von Fagan (seven rebounds) and senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah (nine rebounds) both recorded career-highs with 21 and 20 points respectively. Graduate student guard Craig Beaudion II added a season-high 15 points.
 -Guard Gedi Juozapaitis led Maine (6-11, 0-4 AE) with a game-high 24 points.
 -The Retrievers trailed 65-55 with 11:03 remaining but went on a 15-4 run to take the lead for good after Obeng-Mensah's driving layup with 5:26 left in the contest. It was UMBC first lead of the game and they never trailed again.
- UMBC has won 14 of their last 15 contests against Maine.
- The Retrievers shot a season-high 55.1 percent (55.1).
- UMBC made a season-best 25-of-32 free throws.
- The Retrievers outscored Maine by a 36-24 margin in the paint and outrebounded the visitors by a 35-24 margin.
- UMBC's bench outscored Maine's by a 32-13 margin.
 
ABOUT HARTFORD
- The Hawks are in their first season as a Division I Independent and are transitioning to DIII no later than September 1, 2025.
- Hartford has lost eight straight and are 0-7 on the road thus far.
- Briggs McClain (16.1 ppg.) and Kurtis Henderson both average in double figures (10.0 ppg.). -McLain has scored 20 points or more on five different ocassions, including a season-best 24 against Sacred Heart.
- Michael Dunne (9.2 ppg.) knocked down five triples in each of his last two outings.
 
SERIES HISTORY
- UMBC leads 23-20
-The Retrievers have won seven of the last eight meetings, including an 80-60 home victory in the America East Semifinals last season. Yaw Obeng-Mensah (UMBC) and Jared Kimbrough (Hartford) are the only returners who started in that contest.
- Hartford last won in Baltimore during the 2020-21 season as they recorded a 70-63 triumph.  --- The Retrievers have gone on to win four straight games in the series since that defeat.
 
ROAD WARRIORS
- UMBC has won four of their last five road contests after defeating Bryant last Sunday. The lone loss came at Maryland on Dec. 29.
- The Retrievers are now 4-4 on the road after they finished just 6-10 away from home last season.
 
DOG BITES
- UMBC is looking for their 10th non-conference regular-season victory for the first time in their DI history.
- The Dawgs are averaging 86.0 ppg. over their past three games, all AE wins.
- UMBC is 12-1 when they shoot 40 percent or higher. The lone loss came at UNC Greensboro. They are also 11-0 when they outshoot their opponent.
- The Retrievers are 7-0 when they hold opponents under 70 points.
- Tra'Von Fagan is averaging 14.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and is shooting 68 percent (21-of-31) in America East play.
- UMBC is a combined 40-of-46 (87 percent)  from the foul line in the final four minutes this season.
- Matteo Picarelli is 16-of-17 (94 percent) from the line in AE play.
- Craig Beaudion II went 7-for-8 from the foul line against Maine on Saturday. He entered the game just 6-for-9 from the stripe.
 
 TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
UMBC ranks 18th in the country with a 1.50 assists/turnover ratio
The Retrievers are 13th in the country in fewest turnovers per game (10.2).
UMBC committed a season-low 5 miscues at Bryant last Sunday.
Starting point guard Craig Beaudion II is 23rd in the country in assists/turnover ratio (2.90). He's also 7th in the AE in steals per game (1.4).
UMBC is 9-3 win they win the turnover battle.
 
BENCH MOB
UMBC's bench ranks 28th in the country with 28.4 ppg.
Matteo Picarelli leads the charge at 10.9 ppg.
 
THAT 70'S SHOW
The Retrievers scored 70 or more points in 10 straight before the 64-point output at Maryland. It was the first time they had hit the mark 10 straight times since the 2000-01 season. They are 11-2 when they score 70+ this season.

UMBC leads the conference in free throw percentage (.760), 3-pt field goals per game (9.4), turnover margin (1.9), assists/turnover ratio (1.50), assists per game (15.2)
