Men's Soccer Falls, 1-0, to UAlbany in America East Opener

Retrievers control second half, but allow a late goal to the Great Danes

Box Score BALTIMORE – Visiting UAlbany scored in the 85' to break a scoreless tie and defeated UMBC, 1-0, in the America East Conference opener for both sides.

The Retrievers outshot the Great Danes, 13-9, and attempted eight of the contests 11 corners, but could not solve Shafique Wilson, who made five of his seven saves in the second half.

UMBC came out strong in the second half and had four outstanding chances to take the lead, but Wilson made sterling saves on Taylor Calheira (47'), Spencer Hanks (56') and Ryan Becher (68'). Calheira also had a shot from inside the box in the 62' hit the top of the crossbar.

UAlbany scored the game's lone goal on a sequence where UMBC netminder Quantrell Jones made a diving save of an outside shot, a Great Dane follow up hit the post and Jackson Finn tapped in the rebound.

Jones finished the game with five saves for UMBC.

The Retrievers face New Hampshire in Durham on Saturday, Oct. 1.
