Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Calheira Scores 10 Seconds Into Play in Men's Soccer's 4-1 Win over St. Francis Brooklyn

Tyler Harry nets his first career goal as UMBC improves to 3-0

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's soccer team continued its early season barrage, as the host Retrievers defeated St. Francis Brooklyn, 4-1, to improve to 3-0-0 on the season.

Junior forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep), who set a school record by scoring 10 seconds into the contest, tallied twice and added an assist on classmate Tyler Harry's (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) first career goal.

Sophomore forward Spencer Hanks (Odenton, Md./Arundel) tallied his fourth goal of the year in the 5', as UMBC sprinted out to a 2-0 lead.

The Retrievers have amassed 14 goals and allowed 3 over the first 270 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Off the opening kick-off, Karl Quist-Therson played the ball to Calheira, who cut through two defenders towards the center of the field and arched a shot from 24 yards out just under the far right portion of the crossbar.
  • Just 4:56 into the game, Calheira had another drive, but this was saved by the keeper. Senior Ryan Becher pounced on the rebound and threaded a pass to the right wing, where Hanks hit a 14-yard shot with his left foot into the far left corner.
  • The game settled down and UMBC took a 2-0 lead into intermission.
  • Harry and Calheira worked some magic that resulted in UMBC's third goal. Calheira chested a long Becher pass down to Harry, who sent his teammate expertly down the right wing. Calheira played a cross to the center of the box, where Harry volleyed It past keeper David Santiago in the 70'.
  • Just 26 seconds later, Calheira took a pass from William Forby and raced towards goal from 40 yards away. His shot from just inside the box on the left side beat Santiago to the near post.
  • After UMBC had replaced all of its starters, the Terriers' Martin Palinic halted the shutout with a goal in the 87'.
NOTES
  • UMBC is 2-0 for the first time since 2018.
  • Calheira (3g, 3a) and Hanks (4g, 1a) each have nine points through three games.
The Retrievers conclude the four-game homestand versus FDU on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m.
