Men's Soccer Captures UMBC-Navy Classic With 2-1 Victory over FDU

Taylor Calheira named tournament MVP; Hanks, Travers net first half goals

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's soccer team (4-0-0) captured the UMBC-Navy Classic with a 2-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson (2-1-1) at Retriever Soccer Park.

The Retrievers are now 4-0-0 for the first time since 2013, when they opened the campaign at 9-0-0.

Sophomore forward Spencer Hanks (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and junior back Jordan Travers (Urbana, Md.) scored first half goals for UMBC and the Retrievers held off the Knights in the waning moments of the game.

Taylor Calheira, who scored twice in Friday's 4-1 win over St. Francis Brooklyn, earned tournament MVP honors. He was joined on the team by Hanks, Lasse Kelp, Quantrell Jones and Ryan Becher

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UMBC senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones made a sprawling save in the 6' to keep the game scoreless.
  • Senior midfielder Ryan Becher initiated the first goal the game, penetrating deep into FDU territory and feeding junior striker Alek Wroblewski in the box Wroblewski touched a short pass to his right, where Hanks buried his fifth goal of the year from nine yards out.
  • Off a UMBC corner kick, Knight goalkeeper Spencer King punched the ball out, but Travers was waiting at the top of the box and volleyed it home for his first collegiate score.
  • UMBC outshot FDU, 9-3, in the first 45 minutes, but the visitors responded in the second half and cut the lead in half in the 76' on a header by Hugo Bacharach.
  • FDU attempted four shots in the final 13 minutes, but none were on target.
