Women's Soccer Opens America East Play at Vermont on Sunday

Retrievers to face defending league champions at noon.

The UMBC women's soccer team (4-3-2) looks to snap a three-match winless streak as they open America East Conference play at defending champion Vermont at Virtue Field in Burlington. The action gets underway on Sunday, Sept. 18 at noon and will be broadcast on ESPN+.

NOTABLE
  • The Retrievers (4-3-2) have been stingy defensively, only allowing three goals in the three-game skid, but have not been able to dent the net.
  • UMBC has only allowed nine goals this season. Amongst league squads, only Maine (5) and UNH (7) have allowed fewer.
  • Senior goalkeeper Morgan McGruder is tied for 21st nationally with four shutouts.
  • The America East Conference tabbed UMBC sophomore fullback Alyssa Clearfield as its Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5. Clearfield has played all 720 minutes through eight games this season after starting 14 of 15 games a year ago.
A GLANCE AT THE CATAMOUNTS
  • The defending America East champions (3-4-0) are 2-2 over their last four matches.
  • Dartmouth edged Vermont, 2-1, in Burlington on Sept. 14. UVM scored a late goal (85') by Sydney Remington to get within a goal.
  • Sophomore forward Kate Bossert leads Vermont with three goals and one assist through seven contests.
  • Senior goalkeeper Erin Murphy has made six starts and recorded a pair of shutouts for the Catamounts.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The Catamounts hold an 11-5-3 series lead and are riding a three-match winning streak heading into play on Saturday.
  • A season ago, Vermont scored a pair of late first half goals and went on to a 3-1 victory at Retriever Soccer Park.
  • UMBC's last victory occurred in 2017 and last win in Burlington took place in 2010. The Catamounts are 3-0-2 versus UMBC in the last five matches at home.
UP NEXT
  • UMBC has the week off and opens the home portion of America East play versus Maine on Sunday, Sept. 25. The opening kick-off at Retriever Soccer Park is set for noon.
