Women's Soccer Wraps Up Non-Conference Play by Hosting Towson on Thursday Evening

The Retrievers and Tigers played a pair of draws in 2021 match-ups

The UMBC women's soccer team (4-2-2) hosts local rival Towson (6-1-1) in their final non-conference match of the 2022 campaign on Thursday, Sept. 15. The Retrievers and Tigers will kick off at 7:00 p.m. on the beautiful Bermuda grass of Retriever Soccer Park and the contest will be broadcast on the America East Digital Network.

NOTABLE
  • The Retrievers (4-2-2) saw their five-match unbeaten streak snapped on Sunday, as the visiting UMBC side fell, 1-0, at Robert Morris.
  • The goal by RMU in the 31' halted a streak of 394 scoreless minutes produced by goalkeeper Morgan McGruder and the Retriever defense.
  • McGruder s tied for 17th nationally with four shutouts. Her goals against average of .875 is ranked second in America East.
  • Junior forward Meghan McKye stands in a tie for third place in America East with four goals in eight contests. She had only scored one goal in her previous two seasons of competition at UMBC.
  • The America East Conference tabbed UMBC sophomore fullback Alyssa Clearfield as its Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5. Clearfield has played all 720 minutes through eight games this season after starting 14 of 15 games a year ago.

A GLANCE AT THE TIGERS
  • Towson (6-1-1) is off to a tremendous start and is riding a five-match winning streak and six-match unbeaten streak heading into tonight's contest. They have outscored their foes, 18-4, in 2022 and have only allowed one goal in the past six games.
  • Against common opponents, both UMBC and Towson earned draws versus GW and defeated Delaware State. The Tigers are coming off a 7-0 home victory versus the Hornets.
  • Junior forward Nia Christopher leads TU with eight goals and she just netted five in the win over Delaware State.
  • Classmate Riley Melendez has started all eight games in the net and is maintaining an 86.7 percent save rate.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The Tigers hold an 11-7-2 series lead with the two draws occurring in each of the past two meetings.
  • A season ago, UMBC's Erin Stevenson scored in the 44', but TU equalized in the 70' in 1-1 double overtime draw. Towson attempted 31 shots and Morgan McGruder came up with nine saves in the net for the visitors.
  • UMBC's last win occurred in 1998; the Tigers have an unbeaten streak of 11 in row versus the Retrievers.
UP NEXT
  • UMBC opens America East play on Sunday, Sept. 18 when the Retrievers face defending champion Vermont in Burlington. The opening kick-off is set for noon.
