Vestal, N.Y. --
Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) picked up a win and a save while striking out 22 in nine innings of work, while
Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio),
Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) and
Zoe Russell (Roxboro, N.C.) all homered to lead the UMBC Softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton on Saturday afternoon.
Paired with other results across the league, the 2-0 and 4-2 victories clinched a second straight America East Regular Season title for the Retrievers.
How it happened in Game 1:
- With two outs in the first, Coppersmith beat out an infield single to first and Pierce followed with a homer to left to give UMBC (28-9, 12-5 AE) and early 2-0 lead.
- That would be all the scoring in the game as both pitching staffs wouldn't allow much the rest of the way
- Coppersmith improved to 8-3 on the season after going all seven innings, striking out a stadium record 16 batters, walking none and allowing just two singles
- She also went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and a run scored
- Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) also had multi-hit games in the effort for the Retrievers
How it happened in Game 2:
- Coppersmith reached on a two-base error with two-outs in the top of the first.
- Pierce then beat out an infield single in which Coppersmith came all the way around from second to score
- Binghamton (19-21, 6-8 AE) took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer to go up 2-1
- Coppersmith hit a leadoff single in the top of the fourth and would score on Della Guardia's two-run homer to left with two outs.
- A single and an error put two runners in scoring position with no outs for the Bearcats in the bottom of the fourth, but Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) would get a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a pop-up to escape unscathed
- Russell sent the first pitch of the top of the fifth way over the fence in center to push the UMBC lead to 4-2
- Matter worked a perfect fifth to keep the lead at 4-2, before Coppersmith entered in the sixth and struck out all six batters she faced
- Matter improved to 15-3 on the season, while Coppersmith picked up her sixth save of the season
- Coppersmith's save also gave her a school-record nine for her career
The two teams close out the regular season tomorrow at noon.
