Softball Battles, But Falls to No.12 Duke, 4-0

Durham, N.C. – The UMBC Softball team battled No.12 Duke in the scorching heat before falling, 4-0, on Friday in the first game of the NCAA Tournament.

With temperatures on the field reaching over 100 degrees, Duke (42-8) got on the board with a solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 1-0.

UMBC (31-11) got its first base runner on a leadoff single in the fourth by Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.), but that would be the Retrievers best chance of the game.

Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) kept one of the best lineups in the entire nation on the ropes for most of the game. She finished with six strikeouts and just five hits allowed.

UMBC faces Georgia in an elimination game tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
