Softball Concludes Season With Hard-Fought Contest Against No.19 Georgia

Durham, N.C. -- The UMBC Softball team concluded the 2022 season with a 6-3 loss in the Durham Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

Georgia (41-17) got on the board in the first on a solo homer, but Coppersmith got the next three in order to escape.

Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) and Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) walked to leadoff the bottom of the first. They both were in scoring position with two outs when Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) ripped a two-RBI single to make it 2-1 UMBC (31-12).

The Bulldogs responded with three in the 2nd to reclaim the lead. Macy Ganzow (Glenn Dale, Md.) worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the second and Keating followed with a single, but UMBC couldn't cash in after the Bulldogs made a great defensive play.

After UGA added another run in the third and Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) singled in the bottom half, but UMBC couldn't score.

Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) entered and pitched a scoreless top of the 4th. The Retrievers got a run in the bottom of the inning after after Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) and Granzow walked, and eventually Lonchar's pinch runner Chloe Obispo (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored on a wild pitch.

Georgia added one more in the 7th to account for the final.

Coppersmith finished the season with the lowest single-season ERA (0.78) in program history, while Matter's 1.01 ERA is good for fourth best.
