UMBC Baseball Bounces Back for 9-5 Win Against NJIT on Saturday

UMBC baseball used a big seventh inning to pull away from NJIT in a 9-5 win on Saturday. Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) provided the go-ahead RBI in the second inning.

BALTIMORE– UMBC baseball used a big seventh inning to pull away from NJIT in a 9-5 win on Saturday. Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) provided the go-ahead RBI in the second inning. 

UMBC improves to 20-28, 9-17 AE on the year while the Highlanders fall to 22-22, 14-12 AE.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • UMBC would get the scoring started in the first. Ian Diaz would rip a single to lead off the inning. Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) would come through three batters later with a double to right center, giving UMBC a 1-0 lead.
  • After the Highlanders tied it, UMBC picked up a run on a Diaz RBI single in the second and extended the lead on a Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) single in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Retrievers would answer an NJIT run in the fourth with a two-run home run from Logan Doran (Greenville, S.C.) to give the Retrievers a 5-2 lead.
  • NJIT would cut the deficit to 5-4, but the Retrievers would put up four runs in the seventh off a single and three wild pitches to take a 9-4 lead.
  • The Highlanders would add a run in the eighth, but Keegan Leffler (Wilton, N.Y.) closed the door for his second save of the year in a 9-5 win. 
  • Diaz had three hits in the game and scored three times. Doran also had a multi-hit game with two RBIs.

UMBC and NJIT will conclude their series tomorrow, Sunday, May 15 at 12 p.m.
