Coppersmith and Matter Named America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Year, Four Total Retrievers Earn Conference Honors

BOSTON -- For the third consecutive season, UMBC Softball's Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was named America East Pitcher of the Year, while Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) was named Rookie of the Year and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) and Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) earned All-Conference honors.

Head Coach Chirs Kuhlmeyer also earned his second straight Coach of the Year award.

Coppersmith became just the second player in America East history to win three Pitcher of the Year awards (Boston U's Audrey West won in 94-96). The lefty is 8-3 on the season with a school record six saves and is second in the NCAA with a 0.31 ERA. She also leads the nation in strikeouts per seven innings (13.7), and has thrown three no-hitters this season, including a 20 strikeout perfect game against Brown. She was also named First Team All-Conference as a pitcher and to the Second Team as an outfielder (she batted a team-high .354 with four homers and 18 RBI). The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major has a 3.74 GPA and also made her third All-Academic team.

Matter also was also named Second Team All-Conference and to the All-Rookie Team. She led all freshmen with a 15-3 record and 1.03 ERA, both second overall in the Conference. Opponents hit just .153 against her during the season, and she also threw an 18 strikeout, one walk no-hitter against Morgan State in her second career start. She finished the regular season with 166 strikeouts and just 17 walks.

Pierce earned First Team All-Conference honors after a stellar season in which she batted .345 with three homers, 20 RBI and tied for the team-lead with 40 hits. The 2021 America East Championship Most Outstanding Player is a three-time All-Championship Team honoree, who also made Second Team All-Conference in 2021.

Hawker earned Second Team All-Conference after batting a career-best .329 with five homers (career-high) and 18 RBI. She was a member of the 2019 All-Rookie Team and also had career-highs in slugging (.557) and OBP (.365).

UMBC (28-10, 12-6) opens up America East Tournament play in Binghamton on Thursday at 11 a.m. against the winner of the No.4 Binghamton-No.5 Hartford game.
