Men's Lacrosse Handles UAlbany, 16-7

Retrievers set season bests for goals scored and allowed in the conference victory

BALTIMORE – UMBC men's lacrosse set season bests for goals scored and allowed as the Retrievers handily defeated UAlbany, 16-7, at Retriever Soccer Park.

UMBC (3-5, 1-2 America East) snapped a three-game slide and improved to 3-0 at home in 2022. Fresh off a Thursday win over Syracuse, the Great Danes (4-6, 2-2 AE) saw their winning streak halted at three.

Nine different Retrievers hit the scoring column, led by career-best, six-point efforts by sophomore A/M Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) and junior attackman Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg). Tregoning recorded his second career hat trick and added a career high three assists, while Doughty recorded two goals and a career-best four assists.

"I felt like we were really prepared," said Head Coach Ryan Moran. "When it came down to executing, I thought we did a good job when the ball was on the deck. I thought we really got first-time ground balls, got the ball up and out and our offense was patient and efficient."

The Retrievers held the potent Great Danes, who were averaging 13.0 goals per game in the three-game winning streak, to four goals in the first 48:48 of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Danes scored just 1:27 into the game, but UMBC equalized on junior midfielder Dane Hall's goal 2:11 later. Hall's score started a 6-0 Retriever first quarter surge as he and graduate student Brett Baucia scored two apiece.
  • UAlbany cut the deficit to 6-3, as the Great Danes switched to a zone defense and stifled UMBC for most of the second quarter. But Doughty converted an inside look from senior midfielder Jack Thomas (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) with 2:36 to play in the half and give the hosts a 7-3 advantage at the break.
  • The Retrievers dominated the third quarter and broke the game open with their second 6-0 run of the game. Goals by Tregoning (9:46) and sophomore face-off specialist Zach Dudley (9:49)  (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) occurred three seconds apart and defensive midfielders Kyle Hoff (Center Valley, Pa.) and Talon Campbell (Highland, Md./Reservoir) tallied their first career goals on fast break opportunities just 39 seconds apart late in the period.
  • UMBC led, 12-4, after 45 minutes and forged ahead by ten goals on two occasions in the final quarter.
Baucia, Hall and senior midfielder Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) each tallied two goals, while Hoff and freshman middie Josh Tang (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) contributed a goal and an assist apiece.

Graydon Hogg led the Great Danes with two goals and one assist.

UMBC outshot UAlbany, 38-31, and Retriever senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) recorded nine saves. Dudley won 14-of-22 face-offs and came up with a career high nine ground balls. Hoff added four ground balls and junior defenseman Tony Diallo (Suitland, Md.) caused three turnovers as the Retrievers won the face-off (15-11) and ground ball (33-18) battles.

The Retrievers snapped a three-game slide to the Great Danes and won for just the second time in ten outings versus UAlbany. UMBC's 9-goal margin of victory ties the largest in the series.

UMBC goes back on the road to face UMass Lowell on Saturday, April 16. The opening face-off is slated for noon at Cushing Field.
