Lowell, Mass. – UMBC sophomore attackman
Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) scored a career high four goals and also added a pair of assists as the Retrievers secured their first road victory of the season, an 11-7 triumph over UMass Lowell in America East play.
The Retrievers won back-to-back games for the first time in 2022 and improved to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in America East play.
UMBC held UML to just one goal over a span of 23:44 in the middle portion of the game and turned a 4-3 first quarter deficit into a 10-5 lead with 9:16 remaining in the game.
Senior midfielder
Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) and junior attackman
Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) added two goals for UMBC, while grad student linemate
Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) dished out three assists.
"I'm proud that the team was able to put together a good week of preparation and travel well in order to earn a conference win over a talented UMass Lowell team," said Head Coach
Ryan Moran. "I was particularly happy with how our defense responded after giving up four first quarter goals to allow only three for the rest of the game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The River Hawks, celebrating Senior Day, scored on four of eight first quarter shots and led, 4-3, after 15 minutes.
- But UMBC blanked UML in the second and scored three times, tying the game on Dane Hall's score 57 seconds into the period and taking the lead for good on Doughty's finish from Tregoning on a fast break.
- The Retrievers led, 6-4, at halftime, but the River Hawks opened the second half score at the 1:29 mark. UMBC grad student defenseman Colin Kasner caused a turnover and linemate Tony Diallo raced down the field, working a give-and-go with Tregoning and bouncing a 12-yarder in at the 4:22 mark.
- That goal triggered a 4-0 run, which included a pair of Tregoning goals, and was capped by Bohanan's second of the day to give the Retrievers a 10-5 lead with 9:16 remaining.
UMBC outshot UML, 46-38, but only held a 21-20 margin with shots on goal. Retriever senior goalkeeper
Tommy Lingner made six of his 13 saves in the fourth quarter.
The Retrievers cleared successfully in all 23 attempts. Kasner recorded three of the team's nine caused turnovers, while junior
Mason Edwards picked up a team-best four ground balls.
UMBC completes the regular season with two home games in seven days. The Retrievers welcome Stony Brook to Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday, April 23 and a noon opening face-off is on tap.
