The UMBC Softball leaves the state of Maryland for the first time this season when it travels to Connecticut to face Hartford this weekend. This will be the Retrievers first trip back to the UH campus since winning the 2019 America East title on that very field.
The teams will play at 3 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
Scouting the Retrievers:
- UMBC (17-5, 2-1 AE) softball picked up a hard fought 1-0 win in the series finale with UAlbany on Sunday afternoon. The Retrievers got their lone run in the third inning, as Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) combined for a three-hitter.
- Matter was named the America East Co-Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season
- Matter went 2-0 while allowing just one earned run in 12 2/3 vs. UAlbany.
- She fanned 21 while walking only two.
Scouting the Hawks:
- Hartford (11-17, 0-3 AE) has dropped nine straight, including seven since Saturday
- Caylee English (5-4) got the start in game one, taking the loss after allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one over 6.0 innings of work
- Samantha Ganaden hit her first career homerun in game one
- Haley Cassidy laced her team leading eighth double of the season in game one
- Julianna Kocenski (6-8) received the start in game two, she took the loss after throwing 3.2 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits and one walk while tallying one strikeout
- Lauren Card entered the game in relief for Kocenski in the fourth and allowed one run on two hits and three walks while setting down one batter on strikes over 2.1 innings of work
- Mara Sczecienski and Samantha Nagel led the Hawks at the plate in game two, each going 2-for-3 at the dish
