Softball Takes Series Finale Against UAlbany, 1-0 on Sunday

UMBC softball picked up a hard fought 1-0 win in the series finale with UAlbany on Sunday afternoon.

BALTIMORE– UMBC softball picked up a hard fought 1-0 win in the series finale with UAlbany on Sunday afternoon. The Retrievers got their lone run in the third inning, as Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) combined for a three-hitter.

UMBC improves to 17-5, 2-1 AE while the Great Danes fall to 10-11, 1-2 AE on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both starting pitchers kept the opposing bats at bay in the first two innings with Coppersmith recording the only hit through two.
  • In the third, Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) led off the inning with a single and advanced on a groundout. After reaching third on a wild pitch, Coppersmith grounded out to short that allowed Stott to cross the plate.
  • That would be all the Retrievers would need with Kya Matter recording 12 strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work for her 10th win of the year.
  • UAlbany would get the tying run in scoring position in the last three innings, but Coppersmith came on in relief, striking out two for her fourth save of the year.

UMBC is back at it next weekend when they travel to Hartford for a three-game series with the Hawks on Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10.
