BALTIMORE – Visiting Maine (10-13, 7-2 America East) swept the series at UMBC (12-15, 4-5 AE), defeating the Retrievers, 13-2, in the series finale at blustery Alumni Field.
After hitting solo home runs in the first two innings, Maine erupted for nine third inning runs. Only one of those nine runs was earned as two of Maine's first four batters to reach in the frame did so via a UMBC error.
The Retrievers scored single runs in the sixth and ninth innings, both via RBI doubles. Graduate student second baseman
Myles Nicholson doubled home
Luke Johnson with a gapper in the sixth, and
Michael Cilio chased around
Eric Shandler with a hard shot down the third base line in the ninth.
Nicholson collected two hits and went 6-for-12 with six RBI in the series. He raised his batting average to .430 through 27 games.
Freshman
Evan Selmer excelled in relief, pitching three scoreless frames and fanning four Black Bears.
UMBC has the week off and will travel to UMass Lowell for a weekend series.
