Men's Lacrosse Overwhelms NJIT, 19-9, on Senior Night

Retrievers clinch No. 3 Seed and will face No. 2 Binghamton in #AEMLAX semis on Thursday in Burlington

Box Score BALTIMORE – UMBC scored a season high 19 goals and overwhelmed NJIT, 19-9, on Senior Night at Retriever Soccer Park.

With the win, the Retrievers (5-6, 3-3 America East) secured the No. 3 seed in next week's America East Conference Tournament. UMBC will face No. 2 Binghamton on Thursday, May 5 at top-seeded Vermont's Virtue Field. The opening face-off is set for 4:00 p.m.

"Everyone got an opportunity to play, which was great to see and we played considerably well," said head coach Ryan Moran. "We shared the ball well on offense… and we created havoc in the middle of the field, which was nice to see."

Freshman midfielder Josh Tang (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the onslaught by scoring a season high four goals. Junior attackman Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md.) posted his second consecutive three-goal game and added a pair of assists as ten different Retrievers hit the nets.

The Retrievers built a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes, as sophomore attackman Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) scored twice and added two assists on UMBC's five goals. They built the advantage to 9-3 with 9:11 remaining in the second quarter before the visiting Highlanders edged to within 10-5 at halftime. NJIT scored the first goal of the third quarter, but a 9-1 Retriever run over a 20-minute span built the advantage to 19-7 early in the fourth.

Graduate student Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Spalding) (2g, 1a), freshman midfield Kevin Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) (2g, 1a) and senior midfielder Jack Thomas (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (1g, 2a) each scored three points for UMBC.

Sophomore midfielder Mateo Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) tallied his first collegiate goal and sophomore goalkeeper Jayson Tingue (Bay Shore, N.Y.) recorded his first career save in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore LSDM Colby Weishaar (Westminster, Md./The Boys Latin School) was credited with five of UMBC's 11 caused turnovers as the visiting Highlanders failed to clear on eight of 20 attempts.
