Coppersmith Records 9th Career No-Hitter; Retrievers Fall at Stony Brook 2-0

UMBC softball senior Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) threw her ninth career no-hitter, but the Retrievers committed three errors in a 2-0 loss on Wednesday afternoon.

Stony Brook, N.Y– UMBC softball senior Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) threw her ninth career no-hitter, but the Retrievers committed three errors in a 2-0 loss on Wednesday afternoon. Neither team recorded a hit in the contest, with each side getting just three runners on base.

UMBC falls to 24-8, 8-4 AE on the year while the Seawolves improve to 27-13, 7-3 AE.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both pitchers were dominant in the first two innings. Stony Brook would breakthrough in the third inning, capitalizing on three Retriever errors to take a 2-0 lead after three.
  • Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) would lead off the fourth with a walk and advance to second on a wild pitch but would be stranded on base.
  • Coppersmith would not allow another base runner after the third inning, while not surrendering a hit in the contest.
  • UMBC had their best chance to break through in the sixth. Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) reached on a throwing error, getting to second. Keating would work to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dempsey but would end up stranded on base.
  • The Retrievers would put the ball in play in the seventh, but were retired in order as the Seawolves defeated the Retrievers 2-0.

UMBC will be back at The Diamond this Saturday and Sunday, April 30-May 1 when they host UMass Lowell. The Retrievers and River Hawks will play two on Saturday on Breast Cancer Awareness Day before closing the series on Sunday on Senior Day.
