Softball Hits Three Homers in Saturday Split

BALTIMORE – The UMBC Softball team hit three home as it kicked-off its final home series of the season with a split against UMass Lowell.

UML took the first game, 4-0, before the Retrievers rallied for a 6-0 win in the second.

How it happened in Game 1:
  • UMass Lowell (26-15, 8-5 AE) got on the board in the first when a blooper into shallow right rolled to the wall for a triple and the next batter followed with a soft bloop that landed on the edge of the infield to score a run.
  • A pair of UMBC errors in the 3rd allowed a second UML run to score.
  • The Retrievers stranded a runner in each of the first four innings.
  • A sixth inning error allowed two more unearned runs to score for the River Hawks
  • Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) took the tough luck loss, striking out 12, walking none and allowing just one earned run in seven innings
  • Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) each had hits for UMBC

How it happened in Game 2:
  • Keating started the game with a leadoff homer to put the Retrievers up 1-0 right away.
  • Coppersmith walked and eventually would score from second on a Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) single up the middle.
  • UMBC (25-9, 9-5) held that 2-0 lead until the third when Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) blasted a three run homer
  • Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) hit a solo homer two batters later to make it 6-0
  • Keating and Hawker each had a pair of hits for the Retrievers
  • Coppersmith cruised to the complete-game victory victory in the circle, striking out 14, walking none and allowing just one hit.

The series concludes tomorrow at noon. UMBC will honor its senior class prior to the game.
