BALTIMORE -- Luke Tyrthall (Poolesville, Md.) and
Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) each had three hits as the UMBC Baseball team defeated cross-town rival Towson, 12-3, on Wednesday night at Alumni Field
UMBC (17-22) got eight innings of one run work from the bullpen after Towson (10-30) scored two in the first.
Trythall finished 3-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and an RBI, while Diaz finished a homer short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.
How it happened:
- Trythall legged out an infield single with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first to cut the Tigers lead to 2-1
- Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) then drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game
- Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) hit a solo homer in the second to give the Retrievers a 3-2 lead
- After Towson tied the game back up at 3 in the third, Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) ripped a two-out, two RBI single up the middle in the bottom half of the inning to give UMBC the lead back for good at 5-3
- Diaz would triple and score on a throwing erro in the fourth to make it 6-3
- In the fifth, Nicholson beat out a double play ball to drive in a run and pus the lead to 7-3
- Diaz followed with an RBI single to give the Retrievers an 8-3 lead
- In the seventh, Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) reached on a leadoff walk, stole second and then scored when he stole third and the throw sailed into left field.
- Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) drew a bases loaded walk in the eight to make the score 10-3
- Ryan scored on a wild pitch and Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) had a pinch hit RBI single to close the scoring for the contest
Owen Hamilton (San Anselmo, Calif.) picked up his first win of the season, allowing just one run in two innings of work.
Max Nielsen (Setauket, N.Y.),
Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.),
Connor Kelly (Cumberland, Md.) and
Keegan Leffler (Wilton, N.Y.) combined to pitch a scoreless final six inning.
UMBC heads to BInghamton for a critical America East series this weekend. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
