Matter Earns Sixth America East Rookie of the Week Nod; Softball Makes Trip to Stony Brook on Wednesday

BOSTON- Freshman pitcher Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) earned her league-leading sixth America East Rookie of the Week honor, the Conference announced on Tuesday.

Matter picked up her 14th win of the season after pitching three scoreless innings at Towson last Wednesday.

After having a weekend off, the UMBC Softball team returns to action with a single America East game at Stony Brook on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.


Scouting the Retrievers:
  • Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) and Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) each homered, and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) picked up a up her program single-season record fifth save to lead the UMBC Softball team to a 4-2 win at Towson last Wednesday
  • UMBC exits its bye weekend with a record of 24-7, 8-3 AE
  • These two teams last faced-off on April 13th at The Diamond when UMBC swept a doubleheader
  • That day, Coppersmith homered at the plate in game one, and then became the UMBC All-Time Strikeout leader in the second game
  • Her three-run homer in the third inning of game one put the Retrievers up for good in a 5-1 win, before she pitched a 10-strikout complete game shutout in a 3-0 win in the second game.
  • Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) each homered on the day, while Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) added an RBI single. 

Scouting the Seawolves:
  • Stony Brook (25-13, 6-3 AE) is on a four-game winning-streak after sweeping Hartford at home last weekend
  • In the final game, Corinne Badger went 2-3 at the dish was an RBI double and a run scored. It was her 13th multi-hit game of the season, the most on the team.
  • Sophomore infielder Ashley Jacobson went 2-2 at the plate with two runs scored. It marked her third multi-hit game of the season and second of the series. All three of her multi-hit games this season have come this week.
  • Catherine Anne Kupinski went 2-3 with an RBI double and a run scored.
  • Alicia Orosco was 1-4 at the plate with two RBI. Orosco has now reached base safely in eight consecutive games.
  • Dawn Bodrug earned her 16th win of the season as she tossed her 45th career complete game.
