Comeback Effort Falls Just Short for UMBC Baseball in 6-5 Loss to Stony Brook

UMBC baseball battled back from two-run deficits twice and got the deficit to just one in the ninth, but fell in the series finale 6-5 on Sunday.

BALTIMORE– UMBC baseball battled back from two-run deficits twice and got the deficit to just one in the ninth, but fell in the series finale 6-5 on Sunday. Logan Doran (Greenville, S.C.) led the way with three hits and two RBIs in the loss.

UMBC falls to 16-22, 7-11 AE on the year while Stony Brook improves to 17-20, 12-6 AE.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stony Brook broke through in their half of the first with a pair of runs to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • UMBC countered in the third. Logan Doran laced a two-run single to left to tie it at 2-2.
  • After a scoreless fourth, Stony Brook retook the lead in the fifth and got another run in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.
  • That lead would be short-lived with the Retrievers fighting back to tie it in their half of the sixth. Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) had an RBI groundout that scored Doran to make it 4-3. Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) later drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 4-4.
  • But the back-and-forth battle continued with the Seawolves getting a two-run home run in the eighth to regain a 6-4 advantage.
  • After a scoreless top of the ninth, Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) singled to third to lead off. He would advance to second on a Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) single.
  • Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) would drive him in with a single through the right side to cut it a 6-5 Stony Brook lead. However, a flyout would end the threat as the Seawolves held on for the 6-5 win.

NOTABLE:
  • Doran led the Retrievers with three hits and two RBIs.
  • Taylor was the only other Retriever with multiple hits, going 2-4 from the dish.

UMBC will continue their homestand against local-rival Towson on Tuesday, April 26. First pitch with the Tigers is set for 6 p.m.
