Stony Brook Edges Men's Lacrosse, 13-11

Goalkeeper Tommy Lingner stops a career high 19 shots on goal

BALTIMORE – UMBC jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but visiting Stony Brook (9-4, 4-1 America East) controlled the face-offs in the middle quarters of the game and rallied to defeat the Retrievers, 13-11, at Retriever Soccer Park.

UMBC dropped to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in America East play, but has clinched a spot in the America East Tournament by virtue of UAlbany's win over NJIT on Friday evening.

UMBC freshman midfielder Jordan Galloway (Grasonville, Md.) and junior attackman Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) paced the Retrievers with three goals and two assists apiece.

Senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) excelled in the nets for UMBC, stopping a career-high 19 shots on goal by the Seawolves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Retrievers scored twice in the first 4:55 of play as Dane Hall and Brian Tregoning found the nets. After a Stony Brook response, Galloway closed the first quarter scoring with his 11th goal of the season.
  • UMBC extended the run to 4-0 as Galloway and Taylor Bohanan hit the nets in the first 4:29 of the second quarter and Doughty converted a Brett Baucia man-up feed to build the lead to 6-1 with 7:53 to play in the first half.
  • But SBU won all eight second quarter face-offs and finished the half on a 4-0 run to close to within 6-5 at halftime.
  • The Seawolves captured the first six draws of the second half, scoring the tying goal just 36 seconds into the third quarter and taking the lead for good at the 2:58 mark.
  • Stony Brook extended the run to 7-0 before Bohanan brought the hosts to within 8-7 with 7:48 remaining in the third.
  • SBU continued their surge at the "x", eventually winning 14 consecutive and scoring five additional goals to lead 13-7 with 9:46 remaining in the final period.
  • UMBC would not relent, as Galloway completed his first career hat trick to end the 12-1 run with 4:51 remaining. The Retrievers took advantage of several late SBU penalties, scoring three times in the final 55 seconds.
NOTES
  • Galloway registered a season/career best five-point game and joined Mike Doughty as first-time three-goal scorers.
  • Bohanan and Dane Hall also scored two goals apiece for UMBC.
  • Shots were 46-all, as UMBC totaled 19 fourth quarter attempts.
  • The home loss was UMBC's first of the season (3-1) and first ever on the Bermuda grass of Retriever Soccer Park. The Retrievers won all three contests played on that field in 2006.
UMBC completes the regular season and celebrates Senior Night on Friday, April 29 when they host NJIT. The opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m., with senior ceremonies starting at 6:45 p.m.
