The UMBC men's lacrosse team (4-5, 2-2 America East) continues its playoff push on Saturday, April 23 when they welcome the Stony Brook (8-4, 3-1 AE) Seawolves to Retriever Soccer Park. The opening face-off is set for noon and the game will be broadcast on the America East digital network with Gary Stein and
Nick Doyle, '21 on the call.
UMBC is 3-0 at Retriever Soccer Park, its temporary home for the 2022 season. The Retrievers earned their first road win of the season with last week's 11-7 win at UML.
Sophomore attackman
Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) leads the offense with 12 goals and 13 assists, while linemates
Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) share the team lead with 14 goals. Doughty is ranked fourth in America East with 1.44 assists per game. Baucia is the lone Retriever with points in all nine games to date.

Tommy Lingner's (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) 9.90 goals against average is ranked eighth in the nation.
Sophomore face-off specialist
Zach Dudley (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) just became the 26th player in school history to win 100 face-offs in a single season. He is third in America East with 5.22 ground balls per game and has won 53.5 percent of his draws.
NOTES FROM UMBC 11, UMASS LOWELL 7
- Sophomore attackman Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md.) scored a career high four goals and also added a pair of assists as the Retrievers secured their first road victory of the season, an 11-7 triumph over UMass Lowell in America East play.
- The Retrievers won back-to-back games for the first time in 2022 and improved to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in America East play.
- UMBC held UML to just one goal over a span of 23:44 in the middle portion of the game and turned a 4-3 first quarter deficit into a 10-5 lead with 9:16 remaining in the game.
RETRIEVER NOTEBOOK
- UMBC stands second in the nation in man-down defense, killing off 21 of 26 penalties through nine games. After allowing four XMG in the first three games of the season, the Retrievers went for five consecutive games without allowing a man-up goal until surrendering one at UML on April 16. UMBC's 26 penalties committed is the third-fewest in the country.
- After permitting only 14 goals in the last two games, the Retrievers are now ranked tenth in scoring defense (10.00 ga/game). UMBC is 23rd in face off winning percentage (53.1)
- A season ago, UMBC won four of five one-goal decisions, but are 0-2 in those ultra-thin margins in 2022.

- The UMBC men's lacrosse team has selected fifth-year senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) as its captains for the 2022 spring campaign. Both players are first-year captains.
- Lingner allowed only 9.18 goals per game in 2021, leading America East and finishing sixth in the nation. As a freshman, the Retriever netminder led the country with a 7.33 GAA. Earlier this season, Lingner became the seventh goalkeeper in school history to record 400 saves. His 461 stops is now sixth on UMBC's all-time list.
- Graduate student Colin Kasner (Crofton, Md./DeMatha) recently became the third Retriever in school history to amass 60 caused turnovers and now has 62.
- Freshman attackman Josh Tang (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) could step into a prominent role in 2022. Inside Lacrosse unveiled its Power 100 Incoming Freshman Rankings for the Class of 2022 and Tang earned the No. 82 spot amongst the nation's elite first-year players.
- Fresh off winning its first-ever America East men's lacrosse title in 2021, Vermont is the preseason favorite to top the standings in 2022. The Retrievers were picked fourth, by just two points behind second-place Stony Brook. UMBC received the only first place vote which did not go to the Catamounts.
- Ryan Moran enters his sixth season at the helm of the Retrievers. He earned America East Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the squad to a share of the regular season title. He has led the Retrievers to the league playoffs in four of the five full years of competition. As the No. 4 seed, Moran piloted the 2019 team to an America East title and a NCAA Tournament win over Marist. Moran is 34-34 overall and 18-13 in America East play.
- Nick Griffin, UMBC '21, has joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Griffin has been a member of the Retriever men's lacrosse program since the fall of 2016. As a sophomore in the spring of 2018, the defenseman became the first UMBC men's lacrosse NCAA Division I student-athlete tabbed to the Google Cloud Academic All-American team. Griffin was named the team's captain in both 2020 and 2021. Griffin joins Joe Bucci and Craig Chick on the UMBC sidelines this season.
A GLANCE AT THE SEAWOLVES
- Stony Brook is 8-4 on the season, including 3-1 in America East play. SBU has won their last three contests, including a 7-3 win at previously AE undefeated Binghamton on April 16.
- In his first career start, freshman goalkeeper Jamison MacLachlan stopped 10 of 13 Bearcat shots to guide Stony Brook to the victory. He earned America East Rookie of the Week honors.
- Stony Brook averages a league-best 13.2 goals per game and have also tallied a league-high 21 man-up goals. They face-off at a 52.4 percent rate and average a league-best 34.8 ground balls per game.
- Sophomore attackman Dylan Palonetti leads the conference with 2.67 goals scored (32) per contest. He has taken a league-high 120 shots in 2022. Senior midfielder Matt Anderson has contributed 24 goals.
SERIES HISTORY
- UMBC won a pair of overtime games versus Stony Brook in 2021, earning a 13-12 four-OT victory at UMBC Stadium in early March and a 14-13 triumph in one extra period on Long Island in late April.
- The Retrievers have won three consecutive games in the series and have gained a 17-11 all-time series lead. Prior to the recent three-game streak, SBU had won four of five, including a 7-6 victory at UMBC Stadium in 2018.
