Dempsey and Turner Homer; Coppersmith Sets Single Season Save Mark as Softball Beats Towson

TOWSON -- Casey Turner (Baltimore, Md.) and Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) each homered, and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) picked up a up her program single-season record fifth save to lead the UMBC Softball team to a 4-2 win at Towson.

The Retrievers head into their bye weekend with a record of 24-7, 8-3 AE.

How it happened:
  • Towson got a sun-aided leadoff triple in the first, but Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) got a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to keep the game scoreless
  • Turner got UMBC on the board in the second with a one out solo homer
  • Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) hit a one out double in the third and Dempsey followed with a two-run shot to left. 
  • The Tigers cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth, but Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) stranded two runners to keep the Retrievers up
  • Coppersmith hit a two out double in the fifth, and was followed by singles from Zoe Russell (Roxboro, N.C.) and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) made it 4-2.
  • Madison O'Berg (Lorain, Ohio) and Coppersmith combined to work a scoreless fifth
  • Coppersmith shut the door in the last two innings to pick up the save

UMBC returns to action next Wednesday with a single game at Stony Brook. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
